Soundzipper Acoustic Consultant: Candice Yung

The Challenge

The main challenge for this project was the low-frequency sound isolation as the client has a powerful karaoke audio system in a penthouse apartment. Due to the close proximity of the neighbouring unit, the design for sound and vibration isolation shall be sufficient to ensure minimal disturbances to the neighbours at late hours as the sound level of the karaoke system can get up to 100dB.

The Analysis

The main purpose for this space is for late night karaoke. Microphones will be used with the system and high sound level is expected. The isolation performance of the walls and doors are the main focus due to client’s concerns on disturbing the neighbours across the karaoke room. With the intentions to minimise vibration transmission, vibration isolators shall be utilised in the walls, ceiling and floor to create a vibration-isolated structure. TECSOUND SY50 damping sheet shall be included in partitions and ceiling to strengthen the isolation performance as well.

The Design

To optimise the space with sound isolation, a low profile box-in-box isolation design including vibration isolation walls, ceiling and floating floor. STC50 4-sided frame metal doors with double rebate rubber gaskets were used in this build to maximise sound isolation. The ceiling was also strengthened with TECSOUND SY50 damping layer before the spring vibration isolated ceiling. SCHUECO STC44 Sound isolation slide-fold window was installed to boost the isolation performance of the existing sliding window. The post-construction test showed full compliance to the design specification.
