The Challenge

Soundzipper was tasked to provide acoustic design and build services for a home cinema in a bungalow house in Bukit Tunggal, Singapore. The main objective of our design was to provide adequate sound insulation and acoustic treatment for the home cinema in the basement. The main purpose for the home cinema is for movies.

The Analysis

Due to the space allocation, the home cinema is designed to be in the basement far away from bedrooms. There is a living area outside of the home cinema. The partition and door between the two spaces shall have sufficient sound insulation. The Reverberation Time (RT) within the cinema shall also be controlled to minimize unwanted sound reflections.

The Design

The partition between the living area and cinema was designed to be STC68 drywall with vibration isolation brackets and TECSOUND acoustic damping sheet SY50. The door on this partition is STC44 acoustic door with composite core and full acoustic seals. As for the RT, the rear wall is cladded with TOPAKUSTIK 14/2 panels with 50mm rockwool backing to achieve NRC 0.8. The side walls are treated with 2 thickness types (7mm and 14mm) of BWF polySONIC to create an acoustic feature wall.
