Soundzipper Acoustic Consultant: Candice Yung
The Challenge
Three multipurpose halls were studied in this project. They are very large in size ranging from 10,000m3 to 20,000m3 with different room shapes. The original finish material designed was mainly marble and glass, as well as some stone finish. As most material finish in the large space are sound reflective material, the reverberation time (RT) in these spaces are expected to be very high which may lead to low speech intelligibility. With the purposes of press conference and music show, the challenge is to control the reverberation time to acceptable range and maximise Speech Transmission Index (STI) for press conference purposes.
The Design
To avoid drastically changing the original design, acoustic polyester panels were proposed to be installed in ceiling areas. By including acoustic materials at certain areas, the overall simulated RT was reduced and STI was improved.
The Analysis
The acoustic analysis was conducted with Enhanced Acoustic Simulator for Engineers (EASE) software. The 3D models of the halls were imported in EASE to simulate the RT performance as well as STI for the original design. The simulated RT for the three halls were very high in which several acoustic materials were proposed to reduce the RT and improve STI.
