The Challenge

Soundzipper was engaged to perform acoustic testing for the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) at 55 Newton Road, Singapore 307987. The objective was to evaluate the sound isolation performance of various partitions and rooms within the office space to ensure a comfortable and private working environment.

The Analysis

Acoustic testing was conducted on multiple partitions and rooms across different floors (Levels 3, 4, 15, and 19) of the IRAS office. The tests focused on measuring the Noise Isolation Class (NIC) of partitions between open office areas, meeting rooms, and directors’ rooms. The NIC ratings provide insights into the effectiveness of sound isolation between spaces.

The Observations

The main points of sound leakage were identified as:

1. Doors, which were often the weakest points in the partitions.
2. Gaps at door perimeters, where existing seals were not properly engaged.
3. Possible leakage through false ceilings and floor-to-wall connections.
4. Potential sound transmission through connected air ducts.

These findings provide valuable insights for potential improvements in acoustic performance, such as upgrading door seals, addressing partition weaknesses, and improving ceiling and floor-wall junctions to enhance sound isolation throughout the office space.
