The Challenge
Soundzipper was engaged to perform acoustic compliance testing for Tanglin Trust School in Singapore. The objective was to assess the acoustic performance of various spaces within the school—including classrooms, music rooms, performance areas, and meeting rooms—to ensure they met the specified acoustic requirements. Providing optimal acoustic environments is essential in educational settings to enhance learning, music performance, and communication.
The Analysis
Our team conducted comprehensive acoustic testing throughout the school’s facilities. This included measurements of Noise Criteria (NC) to evaluate background noise levels, Reverberation Time (RT) to assess how sound decays in a space, and Apparent Sound Transmission Class (ASTC) to determine the effectiveness of sound insulation between rooms. Tests were performed across multiple levels of the school building, covering spaces from reception areas to specialized music rooms and performance areas.
The Result
The testing confirmed that all spaces complied with their respective Noise Criteria requirements, ensuring appropriate background noise levels for various activities. Most areas met the Reverberation Time requirements, providing suitable acoustic environments for their intended use. Two classrooms on Level 10 slightly exceeded the RT requirement but were expected to comply when occupied, as furnishings and occupants can reduce reverberation. The majority of partitions and doors met or exceeded their ASTC requirements, ensuring adequate sound isolation between spaces and minimizing disruptions.
By meeting the specified acoustic requirements, Soundzipper helped Tanglin Trust School create optimal learning and performance environments. Minor issues identified were addressed to ensure full compliance across all areas. This project highlights our commitment to enhancing educational spaces through precise acoustic solutions that support teaching, learning, and performance excellence.
