Acoustic Consultants: From Architecture to Acoustics

Acoustic Consultants

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Coming from a land Downunder, Alex Tu finally completes the Soundzipper jigsaw puzzle. His experience in architecture now soars in the world of acoustics.

As one of the leading acoustic consultants, what is your philosophy?

Acoustic consultants have different purposes! Each to make a space sound better. My calling is to design and realise spaces that sound as their purpose intends it to sound. Using the best of my abilities and the limits of the client’s funds is an important process of consulting. In a nutshell, space is primarily for sound related activities, all other considerations must accommodate for the acoustics.

What are some of your qualifications?

I started with a Bachelors of Design in Architecture. Upon completion, I decided to specialise in the Masters of Architectural Science (Audio & Acoustics) both at the University of Sydney.

Why did you decide on acoustics and not further in architecture?

Design is more than just visual

One approach in the architecture industry is where ideas and design integrity considers being sacrosanct. There is usually little regard for practical and engineering needs if it compromises their precious design principles.

I feel that current architectural design practice no longer fits the human/animal user in mind but rather for the architect’s vision.

Another is the obsession of aesthetics above all else approach. Humans have more than just our eyes for our sensory perceptions and our experience of life should reflect that. I still keep in touch with architect friends and architecture developments as I still love architecture, though in the full context of sound.

Finally, it is the social and work culture of the industry.

Please explain more…

The lifestyle of an architect includes the ability to work gruelling hours for no extra pay. This serves a matter of norm. While some architects agree to disagree, those who reject that notion are perceived as lacking in commitment.

Acoustic Consultants

The acoustics at Soundzipper is about doing the job right the right way. This includes doing your job effectively within normal hours and to enjoy life. The social culture and activities that architects tend to deem “hip” are also not my cup of tea and the less said about that the better.

After 1 year in SG:
We could do with lighting a fire under the industry and the public in general though that is less to do with Singapore than it is about the difficulty of highlighting the importance of the field. Still too often considered and an afterthought for checking the boxes rather than as an important aspect of design in its own right. Needs to at least be up there with structural, hydraulics and mechanical engineering in importance.

What challenges me?

I personally prefer private projects where the client is willing to invest appropriate money to get the quality and acoustics oriented space deserves.

One example includes the exploration of new methods, tricks or improvements on old ones to achieve the best results. Fulfilling projects is one as the client cares as much as I do. Acoustic consultants should match the quality of acoustics rather than simply another problem to deal with.

I take pride in my work and cannot stand sub-par work with my name attached to it. I will hold others involved to the standards I hold.

When it comes to technical and knowledge aspects, I still have much to learn but where/when an issue piques my interest I pursue it relentlessly.

Favourite Projects

Acoustic Consultants

I prefer projects which include private clients for high-end projects whose priorities are about quality. These projects are where client deals in good faith allow acoustic consultants to shine in our field and show respects to our craft.

Future accomplishments would be to complete a high-end critical listening/music room, concert hall and raise the awareness of the importance of acoustics in our lives.

If you are looking for acoustic consultants to help you in your project, we are more than willing to do so! Just holla 6509 3529 and we will be with you. Alternatively, if you would like to know more about some of our designs click here!

  1. My good friend has been looking into getting an acoustical consultant. She is interested in getting a professional job done to ensure proper quality. I will remind her something mentioned in this article about investing the right amount of money in a project to get the proper quality work.

  2. Avatar Max Sayer says:

Personally, I don’t know too much about acoustical consulting but I wanted to look up some information about it. I really appreciated how this article talked about how acoustics play an integral role in the design of architectural spaces. This is something that I have never thought about before but I found it really interesting.
